Places of Worship

Flooring for churches, mosques and places of worship.

Places of Worship

A place of worship asks something unusual of a floor. It has to be quiet — footsteps during a service carry in a way they never would in an office. It has to feel warm and dignified underfoot, often for people who kneel, sit or stand on it for long periods. It has to take a full congregation arriving and leaving in a few minutes, week after week. And it has to be cleaned regularly without the fabric staining or holding odour.

Flocked flooring answers those four at once: a dense nylon 6.6 textile surface that is markedly quieter to walk on than stone or vinyl and tested to an impact-sound reduction of ΔLw 21 dB, on an impervious backing that lets the whole floor be wet-mopped, extraction- or steam-cleaned. Because it is digitally printed, a congregation can also have its own pattern, colour or motif in the floor rather than choosing from a catalogue — with no tooling cost.

One thing to be clear about: a floor reduces footfall and impact noise, not the reverberation of a large hall. Echo in a worship space is controlled by ceilings, wall treatment and soft furnishings. The floor makes the footsteps quiet; it does not make the room acoustically dead.

What this space needs from a floor.

01

Quiet during a service

Footsteps on stone or vinyl carry through a hall. A dense textile surface is markedly quieter underfoot, and impact sound to any room below is reduced by a tested ΔLw 21 dB (ISO 10140-1 / 717-2).

02

Warm and dignified underfoot

Congregations kneel, sit and stand on the floor for long periods. A textile surface is warm and forgiving in a way that stone and hard floors are not.

03

A congregation arriving at once

Weekly peak traffic in a short window, through the same doors and aisles. The short dense pile takes concentrated footfall without matting or wearing a lane.

04

Cleaned without staining

Spills, candle wax, dust and outdoor dirt. The impervious backing keeps liquid on the surface, so the floor wet-mops, extraction- or steam-cleans instead of absorbing what lands on it.

05

Safe underfoot

Slip resistance tested to EN 13893 with a dynamic coefficient of friction of 0.45 — above the 0.30 low-slip threshold — which matters where older members of a congregation walk.

06

A floor that belongs to the building

Digital print puts a congregation’s own pattern, palette or motif into the floor, including geometric and repeating designs, at no tooling cost.

Questions for places of worship.

Does flooring for a church or mosque need underlay? +

No. Flocked flooring has its own backing and is bonded directly to the subfloor, so the material you quote is the finished floor with nothing added underneath. The subfloor does need to be level, dry and sound — levelling compound and moisture testing are handled locally by the installer and sit outside an FOB supply price.

Will it make the hall less echoey? +

Not on its own, and it would be wrong to claim otherwise. A floor reduces impact and footfall noise — ours is tested at ΔLw 21 dB — but the reverberation of a large hall is airborne noise, controlled mainly by ceilings, wall panels and soft furnishings. The floor makes footsteps quiet; treat the room surfaces separately if echo is the concern.

Can it handle people kneeling and sitting directly on the floor? +

Yes — that is one reason it suits worship spaces. The surface is a dense, short, warm nylon 6.6 pile rather than a cold hard floor, and because the backing is impervious it can be cleaned thoroughly and regularly, which matters where people are in direct contact with the floor.

Can we have a custom pattern for our building? +

Yes. The surface is digitally printed, so any colour, geometric pattern, border or motif can be produced with no tooling cost, and a one-off design costs the same to make as a stock pattern. MOQ is from 500 m².

What certificates come with it? +

Reaction to fire classified Bfl-s1 to EN 13501-1 (SGS), slip EN 13893 CoF 0.45, impact sound ΔLw 21 dB (ISO 10140-1 / 717-2), formaldehyde not detected to GB 18587, and antimicrobial activity tested to AATCC 174 (Intertek). The dated report for your specified product and batch is issued with the order — useful where a public assembly building needs approval.
